WHEN VICINITY ENERGY SET OUT TO HUMANIZE THE POWER BEHIND THE CITY, WE BROUGHT THE INVISIBLE TO LIFE.

OBJECTIVE

Vicinity Energy delivers sustainable, carbon-free thermal energy to some of the most critical institutions across major U.S. cities. The objective was to create a compelling brand video that elevates Vicinity’s impact beyond infrastructure, positioning it as an essential, trusted force powering everyday life.

The film needed to explain district energy, reinforce Vicinity’s leadership in renewable solutions, and build emotional connection with high-stakes audiences—including policymakers, lenders, regulators, and civic leaders—while remaining accessible to the general public.

Defy approached the project with a simple but powerful insight: the most important systems are the ones you don’t notice—until they’re gone.

Our creative strategy centered on Vicinity as the connective tissue of the city—quietly enabling hospitals to operate, universities to educate, and businesses to thrive. Rather than leading with technical explanations, the video humanizes Vicinity’s role by focusing on people and places that depend on it every day.

 

 

The narrative unfolds as a journey: beginning at a Vicinity plant, traveling beneath city streets, and emerging into lived everyday moments—medical care, learning, work, culture. This metaphorical thread demystifies district energy while reinforcing its indispensability. Renewable energy sources and sustainability cues are woven in visually and narratively, reinforcing Vicinity’s forward-looking mission without leaning on industry clichés.

Visually, we avoided overused industrial tropes in favor of authentic environments, restrained use of steam and vapor, and real facilities integrated into city life. Employees appear not as talking heads, but as heroes in motion—knowledgeable, reliable, and deeply connected to the communities they serve. Additionally,  Vicinity’s established brand system was seamlessly integrated with Defy’s newly developed eSteam™ positioning without letting the product overshadow the broader Vicinity story.

Defy led the full production process, from concepting and scripting through shooting and post-production, ensuring a cohesive, brand-forward execution across all deliverables.

    Drone shots of the Philadelphia skyline and Vicinity plant
    Employee hero and action photography
    Creative Direction & Art Direction – Visual guidelines aligned with Vicinity’s brand system and new eSteam™ work.
    Messaging Framework – Humanized, educational language designed to build trust and curiosity across audiences.
RESULTS

Defy delivered a brand film that reframes Vicinity Energy from unseen utility to essential civic partner. By focusing on human impact over hardware, the video builds credibility, clarity, and emotional resonance, particularly with influential decision-makers shaping the future of urban infrastructure.
